Year 8 Make History in County Cup Final Posted on: 22 Apr 2016

Match report by Mr Mackey

Our Year 8 Football Team made history this week in the County Joicey Cup Final.  This trophy has eluded Whitburn for many years and the boys were determined that this would be our year and they certainly delivered against a very talented Framwellgate side who had Academy players on their team!

It was a beautiful bright sunny day and the pitch looked immaculate; the boys were fairly relaxed for a match of this magnitude. We started strongly for the first 10 minutes, chasing down every ball, with Luca, Alex and Oliver bossing the midfield.  Framwellgate started to play their football, passing the ball with one and two touch.  We kept our shape and tactics and our stubbornness eventually wore down the Framwellgate side.  A lovely through ball was played to Dominic Frank who, as ever, outpaced the last defender to get him one on one with the goalkeeper, his shot was placed under the keeper to put us 1-0 up!!!  Framwellgate continued to have the most possession in the game but could not find an end product especially with the performance from Man of the Match Kyle Errington; an absolute colossus at the back and so composed (think John Stones without the mistakes of late).

During half time Evert Robson was given tactical instructions on how to deal with their best player who was beginning to cause us problems. What a job he did; his performance was outstanding, his work rate second to none and he demonstrated his usually trickery when in the opposing half.  Framwellgate started to up their play pushing for an equaliser and managed to hit the post twice with some long range efforts but other than that again the boys looked comfortable defending resolutely.  The boys were 10 minutes from making history when the massively talented Oliver McCulley picked up the ball just past the half way line, danced around two Framwellgate players and shot from 30 yards out, and what a shot as it looped into the top of the net to give Whitburn a commanding lead.  This seemed to knock the stuffing out of Framwellgate, along with any threat and the boys were actually pushing for a third but it never came.  Whitburn made history and were crowned County champions.

Every player was outstanding on the day and I am so proud of each and every one of them!
