Year 9 Pupils Graduate from Nissan Posted on: 6 May 2016

14 Year 9 pupils successfully completed a full week course at Nissan MUK in Sunderland in April.

Competing as two teams, their challenge was to design, model and improve a mini production line to manufacture model cars. At the start of the week the shortest time they could manage to build a single car successfully was 39 minutes with the longest taking over 80 minutes! At the end of the week; after learning then applying modern manufacturing techniques, both teams designed then ran a production line that assembled 15 of these cars in 30 minutes or less.   Time was only one facet of performance measured, the cars were also assessed for quality faults and performance on a test track.

Both teams scored Total Cost scores in the top 10 lowest scores of all schools at Nissan this year and one team was in the top two! The children certainly enjoyed themselves, one commented “I had a brilliant time and would certainly take part in a week like this again” another said that “it was awesome !” When asked to rate the experience, nine scored it as awesome  whilst the other five rated it as excellent.
